"Why do you play drums?" he asked me once when he caught me in the music room sitting in front of the drums. "There are many instruments but why did you choose to learn to play drums?"

"My reason is simple," I said to him with a smile as I grabbed the sticks and started beating them on the drums in front of me.

He covered his ears because I was beating them too loudly.

"That's the reason." I stopped and turned to face him again and saw that he was frowning.

"I don't understand."

"I play drums because it is noisy," I said. "And by playing this instrument, I can pour all my emotions into it without other people noticing. No matter how hard I hit the drums, they won't notice the difference as long as I just follow the beat of the music."

"Because of that?"

"Don't let them be the only reason for me." I lightly punched his shoulder. "It is something important for someone like me."

He stared at me but for a moment he nodded. "Ah, now I understand."

I smiled bitterly and turned my gaze to the drums in front of me. "I need to stay calm in front of others that is why I always control my emotions. Even though I am mad, happy or panic, I still need to look calm."

"Yeah," he said. "Because of the amount of people who have high expectations of you."

"And I can't handle all of that," I said. "So I looked for something that I could do that would help me get out all the emotions I was hiding without hurting other people."

I looked back at him. "Other than that reason, I just love playing drums. The spotlight is not ours but we know our important role in a band. A band without a drummer is not really a band, right?"
