Ch. 5Not Jackson

We quickly emptied some bullets into his brain and he fell down beside Jackson who was now breathing hard.

We rushed over to him but was taken aback by the scar on his arm which had blood oozing out from it.

He had been bitten.

OMG. Not now, not Jackson!

He was slowly gasping for breath as he was losing so much blood.

"Will he die?" I asked Mark who was right beside me watching the scenario in front of us.

He didn't reply as he knelt down beside Jackson to examine somethings on him. He grabbed the bitten hand as he touched the blood oozing out from it. Unlike the normal human blood, this was black and sticky.
He shook his head sadly as he stood up.
"He's not going to make it, he will soon get turned and become one of those bastards." He said sadly. There was pain in his voice even though he was trying to be strong as the captain of the team and as the oldest among us but the pain could still be felt and heard in his voice.

I heaved sadly.

I found it hard to believe we are starting to decrease even when we just started the journey.

"Let's get out of here guys, it's only a matter of time now before he turn into one of them and we won't want to waste him like we did to the others so it's better we get out of here now before he get turned." Mark said and we all walked out of the building locking the door behind us.

I stopped and took one last look at the building and then ran to meet the rest of the team who were now few feets ahead of me.

I felt sad to see Jackson getting bitten.

Now, he's no longer human and will now start feeding on blood just like the other monsters do.

"Keep your eyes open guys, this place is dangerous." Mark warned as we walked deeper into the waste land called city.

I wondered where the survivors in this city are all hiding.

Lizards could be easily spotted on the wall crawling up and down freely with no hindrance.

The cars tyres were completely deflated and the rusty rims proved it to be immovable.

"Anything?" Jane asked Mark whose eyes was glued to the tablet in his hand.

"No, nothing. But don't be deceived. This place is filled with zombies." he warned and we quickly held tight to our weapons.

I looked over to Vera and her eyes were fixed on me. Our eyes met and she gave me a smile.

I returned back the smile.

"Jane behind you!" Mark suddenly screamed as a zombie from nowhere jumped out of his hiding spot and headed toward Jane who was quick to do a front flip and landed away from the human eater.

We fixed our guns on him ready to fire when another two zombies jumped out behind him and they were now three human eaters creatures standing right before us ready to devour us.

"Don't die first." Martins muttered into my ears and that was the very first time I heard him talk since we arrived here.

I looked at him and his face was curved in a smile.

"Fire!!" Mark screamed and we opened fire at them while they charged at us hungrily.

I was quick to block the attack of one of the zombies with my guns as I gave him a punch directly to his face.

He growled as he charged at me swiping his bloody hand across my face. I was quick to dodge it as I hit his face with my gun.

He looked at me furiously and then clutched his hand and rolled it into a ball and started throwing punches at me.

I dodged one of his punches but he connected a kick to my stomach and I was sent flying away.

He started running toward me but got thrown back by Mark before he got to where I was.

"Are you okay?" He asked while I nodded standing up.

" Yes I'm okay. Thank you." I smiled appreciatively.

" Okay guys, the head now! aim for the head!!" Mark screamed.

My eyes went over to Vera who was into a hot fight with a zombie.

The zombie made to punch her face but she grabbed his hand and twisted it back and used her elbow to hit the zombie at the back of his head.

The zombie growled as he pushed Vera away and the latter somersaulted backward and landed on her knees skillfully and quickly shot the zombie on the head before he could make a move.

Wow, she's much more skillful than I had thought.

Minutes later, everywhere was silent. No sound could be heard apart from our hard breath as we were all breathing hard after the fight with the three human eaters.

"That was really a good fight and I must commend, you are really good at fighting." I said to Vera while we both sat on the bare tiled floor in a shopping mall which was deserted but was filled with goods.

"Thank you." she smiled.

She looked so beautiful when she smile.

I shook the thought off my mind.

We began the journey again as we passed through empty houses and deserted cars with flat tyres and rusted rims. There was no car that we could use there, everything was in bad condition.

We walked for one hour but didn't come across any zombie again and also where we are still heading still seems to be very far from where we were.

As we walked past a big mall, my eyes caught some words written boldly on the wall with blood.

"You're all dead." I read inwardly.

Same writing, same words.

Definitely, someone's monitoring us.

But who could that person be?

What did he want from us?

Is he/she among us?

Is the person an antagonist or a protagonist?

Is the person on our side or opposing side?

I just wish something bad will not happen to us.

I had a feeling this is not going to be a peaceful journey. Things will not go as we planned. Things will not fall the right way.

I wanted to call Mark to come and take a look at the writing but decided against it as we walked past it but my mind couldn't stop thinking about it.

Many questions ran through my mind concerning this strange writings but got no answer.

Who wrote it?

What did he want from us?

Is the person really going to kill us?

Is the person part of us here?

Is it Mark? Vera? Jane? Martins? Juliet?
