Ch. 5Part 5

“It seems our target is about to cross the road; he's probably going to approach his wife,” someone in the black Range Rover says.

"Yes, we better speed up. Rather than being pressured all the time," a younger man suggests.

"Em," his companion replies, then quickly starts the car engine.

Their assumption was wrong; it turns out the one crossing the road is not Saga but Areum. Meanwhile, the man in the car has already accelerated.

"Darn! Why isn't our target the one crossing?" the driver curses.

"Never mind! We've already gone this far; just continue!"

Following his companion's words, the driver presses the gas pedal even harder. Areum, who is already in the middle of the road, is shocked at the fast-approaching car. More surprisingly, someone pushes her to the side, causing Areum to fall and wince in pain as her hands hit the asphalt. Areum sits up and looks at the person who is now lying on the road, covered in blood.

"Saga!" Areum cries, then instinctively stands up and runs towards the man who just separated from her.

Areum hugs Saga, who is still groaning softly from his injuries. Areum has been crying while calling Saga's name.

"I beg you not to fall asleep, Saga," Areum pleads.

Saga doesn't respond, only staring at Areum. His hand reaches out weakly and wipes away Areum's tears. Seeing his bloody hand smearing Areum's face, Saga smiles faintly.

"Miane," Saga whispers, taking a deep breath.

"Saga, don't sleep, please. Don't sleep, Saga!" Areum screams.

The man who just helped her exhales heavily, and his hand falls limp. Panicking, Areum starts shaking Saga's body forcefully.

"Saga!!!" Areum screams.

The mourning room in Seoul General Hospital is filled with the sound of cries. Mrs. Min can't stop crying in front of Saga's photo, which is leaning on the coffin of the handsome man who hugged Areum just yesterday.

Areum herself sits on the floor with a dazed look. Her face is swollen, and her eyes are puffy; she doesn't know how long she's been crying since the accident. Areum stares blankly at Saga's photo, a photo that was taken just two days ago before Saga and Areum officially divorced.

Mrs. Min looks at Areum and crawls closer to the girl. No one else knows about their divorce except Tae Jun. Mrs. Min hugs Areum tightly and gently strokes her hair. The girl doesn't respond, staring blankly at the coffin and Saga's photo.

"How could this happen to you, Nak? You two didn't even have a child yet," Mrs. Min laments, regretting what happened to her son Saga.

Areum remains silent, without moving at all. She continues to blame herself, feeling that she is the cause of Saga's death.

"If only you didn't help me, Saga," Areum thinks to herself.

On the day of Saga's cremation, his ashes are planted under a pine tree, a symbol of eternal love in South Korea. Today, the rain is pouring heavily. Areum still doesn't want to leave the area and stands there holding a black umbrella. Her gaze doesn't leave the small pine tree.

"Why is it supposed to be me there now? Why you?" Areum whispers.

Tears, which had dried up since yesterday, started falling again. Areum wipes them away quickly, then looks back at the pine tree. Her eyes become even blurrier as the rain keeps pushing the tears in.

"How can I live now? How can I get through this, Saga? Answer me! You usually always have a reason to convince me. Why are you silent now, refusing to give me a reason to keep on living?"

Areum can't hold back her tears anymore, and she sobs while clutching her aching chest. She even falls to the ground and lets her umbrella drop. Areum doesn't care about the rain soaking her now. She continues to mourn Saga's sudden departure.

Tok…tok…tok…

Mrs. Kang knocks on Areum's apartment door again, but her daughter has yet to come out to open the door.

"What if something happens to Areum, Yeobo?" Mrs. Kang starts to panic. Since Saga's death seven days ago, Areum has not been seen leaving Saga's apartment.

Mr. Kang takes a deep breath and then gently holds his wife's shoulder.

"Areum needs to calm herself; she'll be fine. Let's just wait until she's settled," Mr. Kang says.

"But this is worrying, Yeobo. We should ask for help from Mrs. Min or Mr. Min," Mrs. Kang says, taking out her phone.

Mr. Kang restrains his wife's hand gently. Mrs. Kang then looks at her husband. Mr. Kang shakes his head slightly.

"Don't! They are grieving more than anyone else. Mrs. Min has lost her only son. Let Areum be alone for now. She'll get through this," Mr. Kang says.

Mrs. Kang takes a deep breath and lowers her head. What her husband says is true; Mrs. Min must be grieving deeply right now.

Areum, who has done nothing but hug Saga's photo and sit on the couch, takes out the prenuptial agreements and assets that Saga gave her through his lawyer a few days ago. Areum takes out the last letter Saga left with his lawyer at that time.

"Sorry for taking away your youth just like that. No matter how much I give you, it won't change anything. You will still be my ex-wife and Min's family's ex-daughter-in-law. This is all I have and can provide you. Please live happily after this. Live with what you want and expect. Don't think about others before thinking about yourself. Eat regularly, and take the vitamins that Secretary Han will send you periodically. I hope we can meet again. Not too soon in the next life, it's okay."

Areum crumples the paper and hugs it tightly. She cries again, sobbing as she reads the letter.

"I don't need all these assets. I just need you, Saga," she whispers between her tears.

After crying, Areum stands up and wipes the remaining tears on her cheeks. She walks to the kitchen, heading to a small cabinet containing medications. Areum takes a bottle of medicine; it needs to be clarified what it's for.

Areum sits back on the couch, leaning against it. Her eyes are closed, and her hand clutches the medicine bottle tightly.

"I have to sleep to forget you. I have to return to my dream world where you are there, Saga."

Areum opens her eyes and then opens the medicine bottle. She takes out some sleeping pills without drinking any water. Areum takes a deep breath; she then leans back against the couch. Areum closes her eyes, slowly hearing Saga calling her name. She smiles happily, hearing his name called again.

"Saranghae, Saga," Areum whispers before falling asleep, and her hand drops the bottle of sleeping pills she has been holding.
