Guarding Donnie

“Fine,” I hurriedly fished out my ID card from my wallet and handed it to the younger officer, who took his sweet time perusing it.
“You done?” I asked impatiently.
The younger officer grunted and handed my ID over to his older counterpart.
I growled under my breath, I didn't want to spend another moment away from Donnie.
“Officers,” I frowned when the older officer squinted at my ID as though he couldn't read the words on it, “I need to leave.”
“Not now, mister,” The younger officer delayed, “We have to make sure you're not a criminal.”
I snorted and kept quiet, tapping my foot on the cracked floor of the convenience store. When the older officer held my ID up to the light, my mind began to wander. Due to my looks and my size, cops usually stopped me to ask for some sort of identification, but this was the first time the process was taking this long.
I glared impatiently at the officers, and once again noted they looked out of sorts. A premonition unfurled in my belly, and I began to sweat.
“Officers, can I see your badges?” I asked with my most serious voice.
“What?” The younger officer looked flustered for a moment, before the older one nudged him and said to me, “Why?”
“You've seen my ID, now I'll see your badges.” I knew it wasn't a crime to ask to see a police officer's badge.
The officers blanched and I let out a little laugh as I snatched my ID card from the hands of the older officer.
“You're not really cops, are you?” I queried.
The cops said nothing.
“You know it's a crime to impersonate officers, right? How about I call the real cops on you?” I threatened them.
The younger cop raised his hands in surrender, “Please, don't. You're right. We're not real cops.”
“Then who the hell are you?” I raged, my voice resonating throughout the convenience store.
The officers exchanged glances and suddenly ran out of the store. I wanted to give chase and find out who they really were, but I remembered Donnie was still out there in the car, probably writhing in pain.
I quickly exited the store, telling myself those officers were probably con men who extorted illegal migrants and petty offenders. When I got to the car, I opened the backseat to give Donnie the tampons and painkillers only to see Lisa staring at me with apprehension.
I rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn't dreaming, and still couldn't see Donnie in the backseat.
“Where is she?” My hoarse voice must have startled Lisa, because she gave a little jump.
“Lisa, where the hell is Donatella?” I asked her once again.
Lisa couldn't meet my eyes. I huffed and looked around, but Donnie was nowhere in sight.
“What the fuck happened here, Lisa?” My mind was already piecing it together, but I needed to hear it from Lisa.
“I-I can't tell you, Jack,” Lisa stuttered, looking scared for the first time since I'd known her.
“Yes, you can and you will!” I ordered.
“Why should I?” Lisa screamed.
“Because she's your friend!” I yelled, “She needs to be protected, she can't be left to her own devices!”
Lisa's eyes blazed red at my words, “Yes, she can. Donnie is a strong, smart woman who can take care of herself. You're stifling her!”
“Nico Gambino gave me a job to guard his daughter. From what he told me, he has enemies who wouldn't hesitate to hurt Donatella.” I warned Lisa.
Lisa snorted, “Donnie's father is paranoid.”
“Or he may be right,” I sighed, “We need to get Donatella back before something happens to her. She went back to that club, didn't she?”
Lisa stayed silent for a while, but after, she reluctantly nodded. She probably didn't want to betray her friend.
“Thank you,” I told Lisa as I slid into the driver's seat and turned on the engine.
Donnie had tricked me into thinking she was having cramps, and had returned to the club the moment I'd turned my back on her.
“She'll pay for this!” I growled as I stepped on the gas and drove back to the club.

Donnie

“Take that, Jack Sinclair!” I pumped my fist, and the cab driver looked at me through the rearview mirror to see if I'd gone nuts. I smiled at the driver and did my best to contain my joy.
“We're here ma'am,” The driver said as he parked in the club's parking lot. The vibration and the bass from the building beckoned me. I paid the driver and jumped out of the car, congratulating myself for successfully pulling one over Jack.
He probably thought he was smarter than I am, acting like he owned me. He was my bodyguard, and he was supposed to follow me, not the other way around. He'd learn that lesson tonight.
It was easy for me to gain entrance to the club, and when I entered, I began to survey the place for the hot man who'd almost approached me.
My eyes roamed from the packed bar, to the equally packed dance floor and I sighed with disappointment. The man had probably left, or had found himself a new girl.
A moment later, I shrugged. It was his loss, not mine. If I didn't see him, I could at least take a drink and celebrate my victory over Jack. I secretly thanked Lisa for helping me hire people who had acted as cops and convenience store cashier in the building her father used as a front for his business.
“Hello,” A cool voice sounded behind me, making me jump.
I wheeled around and almost slammed into the man from before. He had dumped his leather jacket somewhere, leaving only a tight t-shirt that showed off his biceps.
His biceps are built, but not like Jack's.
I shut that thought down, it had no place here. Jack was the enemy, and I wouldn't let him ruin a potential . . . whatever this was.
I tacked on my most charming smile, “Hello. I've been looking for you.”
