Ch. 61INDIGO (THIRTY FOUR)

Chastity shrugged. "Just the usual. We spent almost the whole day at the hospital." She gave him a small smile. "I'm sorry I'm starting to look awful.”

Chastity was wearing a bonnet not because she was cold but because she was already losing her hair.
Her chemotherapy has already started. The effects of it were slowly manifesting in her body.

Indigo shook his head. “No. You don't look awful, babe. You look beautiful, always. Even if you still lose all your hair, you'll always be beautiful to me...”

Indigo bid her goodbye for a while. When he came back, he was holding a guitar in his hand. Then he started playing a song.

“When I look into your eyes, it's like watching the night sky. All beautiful sunrise, there's so much to hold. And I won't give up on us. Even if the skies get rough us... I’m giving you all my love…”

Chastity's eyes started to heat up with tears. But instead of letting her tears fall, she managed to smile as she watched and listened to Indigo's performance from the other side of the screen.

That was their routine every day. Indigo never failed to call her when the night comes.

“I'm sorry, your condition is getting worse.” Chastity's doctor told her after a couple of months of staying in Chicago.

The results of her test tell them that her body stopped responding to the medications given to her. Her condition was getting worse. She was getting weaker and weaker each day.

Chastity promised herself that she would fight to live. But she never expected that the time would come when there would be no more option for her but to give up.

“I missed you, baby,” Indigo told her when she finally answered his video call request that night. They weren't able to talk for the past few days because she had undergone treatment.

She stared at him. What if she couldn't make it? What if she failed to fulfill her promise to him?
At that moment, Chastity realized how selfish she is. She was being unfair to Indigo.

She made him fall for him again… even if she knew that she had to leave him.

Indigo didn't deserve her. Indigo deserved someone who would be there for him. Someone who will take care of him.
“I'm tired, Indigo,” she said to him in a cold tone. "I'm sorry."

Indigo gave her a small smile. “I'll call you again tomorrow, baby."

"I can't answer your call. I'll be at the hospital tomorrow, Indigo," she said before she cut off his line. She then closed her laptop and let her tears fall. “I'm sorry, Indigo. I'm sorry.”

After that day, she never opened her social media again. She avoided Indigo's call. Then she asked Karen to tell Indigo to stop calling her anymore. To stop waiting for her anymore.

She also asked Karen to stop updating her about Indigo.

'I'm sorry, Indigo. But this is for your own good, too. I don't want you to hope anymore. I might not come back and I don't want you to get hurt.'

Chastity was already losing hope but then a miracle happened. She didn't expect that she would survive. After two years and six months, she was totally free of cancer.

“Chastity!"

Chastity smiled when she saw her best friend waiting for her at the arrival area of the airport. Her best friend was the only one in the Philippines who knew that she'd be back that day.

"Karen, I missed you," Chastity couldn't help but cry as she pulled Karen for a tight hug.

"I missed you more," Karen told her back, her tears also filled with tears. "Finally, you're back. Healthier as ever."

They stayed that way for a moment before she pulled away and turned to the guy standing behind Karen.

Chastity smiled at her former classmate who was now Karen's boyfriend. “Mark, I'm glad to see you again."

Mark smiled and pulled her in a hug. “We missed you, Chas. We're happy you're back."

He then snatched her luggage from her hand, and together, all three of them went to Mark's car in the parking area.

“What happened, Karen?" Chastity couldn't help but tease her best friend while they were on the road. "I thought Mark's not your type. But now, he's your boyfriend!"

Karen just playfully rolled her eyes. "Even I didn't know what happened, Chas. I'd like to believe that Mark put a love potion on my drink."

“Babe, just admit to your best friend that you're already head over heels for me from the start," Mark said from the driver's seat.

Chastity smiled while looking at them bickering in front. She’s happy for the two of them. They looked really in love with each other. Karen looked happy with Mark.

Karen suddenly cleared her throat. "Chas, aren't you going to ask about Indigo?"

Chastity stilled at the mention of Indigo's name. For more than a year, she hasn't heard any news about him.

“How…how was he?” Chastity managed to ask in a small voice.

She noticed how Karen and Mark meaningfully glanced at each other before Karen's gaze went back to her.

“He… has a girlfriend now, Chas.”

Chastity's chest tightened. She felt like her heart was suddenly struck by a sharp knife.

Maybe, maybe if only she didn't let go of him, they were still together until now.

Stop it, Chas, she told herself as she tried to swallow the lump in her throat. No matter how many times she regretted her decision before, she couldn't change it anymore. She has to move on from the past and live with the present.

“Chas…” Karen looked at her with a worried face. "Uh, are you okay? I'm sorry if that came out as a shock. But you know… I don't want to lie to you."

“Don't worry, Karen. I’m okay.” She swallowed and blinked back her tears. And then she managed to smile. “I’m happy for him."
