Ch. 23Chapter 23

He could be merciless at times. He would constantly thump on my weakness. And I wanted to hate the hell out of Theron for that.
But I can’t do that. Because at the end of the miserable day, we only have each other to count on.
“I went back to the Cabrera hotel. I discovered that Alison doesn’t stop in searching for you yet. She also went back to the establishment where she saw you before. She also tried calling the radio station, hoping to talk to DJ Ros there. I’m thinking that maybe she remembered what happened before that’s why she’s acting this way. Maybe she really wanted to get to know you. There are countless of maybes. And I know that you also feel something for her. You would not leave Netherlands to follow her here in the Philippines if she was not special to you. Do you honestly think that I don’t know where you’ve been heading at every day?”
“That’s enough, Theron,” I said instead in a now firm voice.
“I kept quiet because I was happy,” Theron pressed on as if he heard nothing. “I was happy to know that at long last, you felt motivated again to wake up each morning even if your reason to do that was to keep Alison safe from the supernaturals. I was happy because you found the will to do things again, unlike before that you spent your days waiting to be killed. I was happy to see you trying to live for the sake of that human. I could still remember the first time I saw you fight with Armethians a few months ago.
“They attacked you. And you didn’t intend to fight back. But the minute I told you that Alison was in danger, you fought against the Armethians and you won. Because of that, you were able to save Alison from the beasts who wanted to use her as a vessel. And you did it in just a matter of seconds. For a moment right there, I saw the trace of the old Alexandros Sormont, and I couldn’t be any prouder.”
I flinched. “Please cut it out already.”
“Young master, maybe this is your chance to be happy again. Alison is a good woman and you could see that, too. She’s different from all the female supernaturals and humans who only approaches you because they want to gain something. But you are letting the only woman who made you want to live again slip away without giving it a chance first.”

I’M ALSO aware of what Alison was doing because I always keep an eye on her from a distance. “You should know why I’m doing this, Theron. You know that Alison will also hate me and run away from me once she discovers the truth, once she discovers who I am. Nobody will be able to accept my past.”
“You can’t be too sure of that unless you give it a try, young master. Please stop running away from the things that could give your life a new meaning. You know your greatest hater is yourself. You are blinded by the hatred all directed to yourself that you couldn’t see through things. What if that woman is actually the one for you? What if she really cares about you?”
“Then she has to forget it and move on. As simple as that.” I emptied the wine bottle. “The other humans were able to do it. Alison could do it, too. Besides, she only met me a few times. Her feelings can still change.”
Theron eyed me as if he was challenging me. “If that’s the case, then why do you keep on helping her? You could have handed her to me. And I could have just lent her a crystal ball. Not to mention that everybody knew I’m your assistant. The supernaturals here would not attempt to do something to me. The Armethians won’t even attack me. They don’t give a shit about me. I’m not their target, after all. But you did the opposite. You brought Alison here instead. That means you still want her to see you again-”
“I said stop it!” I unconsciously gripped the wine bottle tightly. After a few seconds, the bottle shattered into pieces and wounded my hand. Aside from my parents, only Theron could talk to me this way because no one else knew me better aside from the three of them.
Besides, Theron was right. I could have just entrusted Alison to him. But I didn’t do that. I’ve saved her life many times. I’ve already paid the debt I owed her many times as well. We should have been even a long time ago.
“Stop asking me because even I, myself, don’t know the answer!” I raised my voice. Even I feel puzzled, too. “I don’t know why I’m being kind to her or to the likes of her when the world has never been kind to me in the first place! And I don’t think I would ever want to know!”
“You need to know, young master. Because you need to understand,” Theron replied in a soft voice. A genuine smile curved on his lips. “If you’re still confused, then let me answer for you. You want to be the one to keep Alison safe. You wanted to be the one to protect her light. You can control your powers to make yourself invisible to other humans but you couldn’t do it when you are beside her because she kept seeing you. It happens because you’re not a hundred percent certain of the spell when it comes to her. Because deep down inside you, you want to see her. And you want her to see you, too.”
Instead of answering, I stood up. I was about to walk away when Theron spoke again. Damn. I was not prepared to hear the truth. But my assistant just keeps on pushing it to me. And as much as possible, I didn’t want to acknowledge it. Because once I do that, I would be forced to face the harsh reality.
