Ch. 15Episode 15

"We are not here for jokes and the
programme is about to start. If you know you are not interested in this programme, I give you
permission to go out so that you can be shown where else to be. It is either you are in the auditorium here or at the orchard". There was absolute calmness everywhere. While he was stil speaking, the Director of the school came up to the altar and requested for permission to speak.
The preacher paused and gave way for him.
There was tensed and taut suspend.
Those at the back were stretching their necks as nobody knew what was coming. The Director was with a long white piece of paper in his hand which contributed to the state of anxiety about his unusual arrival.

He took the microphone "The following people are needed right now at the guest lodge", he said and then began to call the names of the Miscreants. There was a noise of astonishment as some unexpected names were also called.
People who had never for once been involved in any major misconduct were also called. Eyes and ears were widely open as all attention was focused on one direction. The boys were called before the girls. About thirty-two boys and fifteen
girls were involved. After the long list had been called, the students that were involved rose from their seats one after the other and marched towards the guest lodge. All eyes were on them as if they were strangers in the land. Some were looking to know those called out at such a crucial time when every student was in the chapel hearing spirit-inspired messages from the
preacher and being prayed for.
The Director left after calling the list while the preacher took his place again and went on.
"You see", there are people who came to a special school like this and made up their minds not to be obedient and face their studies so as to come out with good results. That's very unfortunate" he said ruefully
The miscreants were caught off guard.
Some had thought that it was all over as nothing had been said since the night they were
interrogated and some flogged.
While we were at the chapel, Sir Herbert came and told me to bring three white seats to the lodge for them. I did not hesitate as I saw it as an opportunity to see the undesirable elements and know where they were being taken
and what would become of them.

When I came to the lodge with the chairs, sir Herbert collected them and sent them to the mock courtroom where the accused were individually called in for a trial. In the big room, I
saw all the disciplinary masters including our patron, a no-nonsense man, and the matron, who was in charge of the girls, and then the Director. They all sat at a long table and the
matron was lamenting the moral decadence in the school in a pitiable voice. The Vice Principal,
who was the spokesman of the disciplinary committee, stood by with his cane in readiness to
strike any of the accused student who might want to evade questions.
I heard the sound of a whip as it swished over the back of one of the girls. She squirmed
and uttered a loud agonizing cry. Others were detained in a room at the lodge guarded by Sir Robinson who kept them in custody pending
their own interrogation. Mattresses were laid on the floor on which they sat hopelessly and
forlornly.
Back at the chapel, the rest of the students were taken through a prayer session and they prayed for themselves and their families. It lasted till late afternoon. They were uplifted in their spirits, though they were stricken by hunger. There was a break so that the students could take their lunch.

After lunch, they retried to the hostels for siesta prior to the evening session of the programme. The siesta lasted till evening at about five o'clock when we all returned to the
chapel. No sooner had we commenced than the miscreants were released. They walked
despondently to the hostel to have their own meal. They looked like outcasts. Some stubborn ones were not moved as they swaggered and boasted loudly.
Later in the night, they began to share their experiences With their friends and they made jest of some of them. Some said that they were not even given an opportunity to explain; they were just accused of offences and were flogged.

"They no even allow make person explain before them go flog", said one of them in their usual pidgin English. Some of them that
happened to be close to me came to my Corner.
People like Antonio Samson and Hector Shane were telling me how horrible it was. Others joined them and my corner looked again like a meeting point.

"Look at how they were doing it, said Antonio. "Once you are called and asked the denomination you belong to, and you mention any of the churches that is known to be a Charismatic and Bible-believing Church, they
Would finish you. They would say, 'so you are from such a church where the undiluted word of God is preached and yet you have this bad trait?'.
For instance...", Antonio continued, Clyde Glen, when he was asked, said to them, my
parents are Church of Christ of Heaven members and I was in it. He thought that would mitigate
his punishment but unfortunately, he was battered the most".

There was a raucous laughter for such an unfortunate experience. "For Daniel Rufus,
he said he is from a Universal Church family. they told him to stay aside first and he was not flogged then, said Hector as he took over from Antonio.
"They Just told me that I was fighting and quarelling with Rufus over Jennifer and they did not allow me to explain. They started flogging me while I kept pleading with them to hear my explanation. They said they did not need explanation from anybody.
"This people are very wicked. Infact, I hate everything they are doing in this school,
said one of them.
