Ch. 9Finally Questions are Answered

Morgan explained that he wanted to arrest Fergus for the murder of the cook Vera Maggs. He told them that he had been approached by a young woman (May) while in the pub in Milton the night before. She told him of her witnessing the murder of Vera the day after Una and Fenella had ran off. She said that Fergus came down to the scullery and began to hit Vera, accusing her of trying to poison him by slipping something in his food the night before. She denied it stating that she would not kill the father of her child. When he heard she was pregnant with his child, he became more angry. He did not want this to be known so he choked the life out of her in the scullery. Morgan explained that he wanted to make sure that justice was done for the murder of the poor cook Vera. Both the women were shocked when they heard this latest awful news, they both knew Vera was not perfect, but she did not deserve to die in such a cruel manner. Morgan had come up with a plan for them to gain access onto Fergus Mullen’s estate without drawing up any unwanted attention.

They wanted to catch Fergus off guard so that they could easily get him under their control while they conducted the business they had come to find out. First to find out if indeed poor Vera's dead body lay in the cellar and secondly the truth of their family history. The plan was that they would arrive at the estate with the men pretending to be bounty hunters. They would use the names of the other devils that had captured the women to hide their own identity. Allowing Fergus to believe that they were just there bringing back the two women to Fergus so they could collect their bounty of 20₤. Handing over his runaway daughter back into his clutches. They would then tie him up and bound him while Morgan investigated the cellar to see if Vera's body was indeed there. After dealing with the gruesome death of Vera, Morgan planned to sit down with Una, and Effie to discuss family history in private. The women were instructed to put on their old gowns so that Fergus would not become suspicious if he saw them wearing their new gowns.

Fergus comes walking out of his front main door as the party arrived, delivering to him his wretched runaway daughter and her deceitful maid. He could hardly wait to pay these men and have them on their way so that he could begin to beat both of these women for their acts of treason—by running away! They were going to regret the day that they decided to run away he was going to make them pay dearly for this—make no mistake. His level of anger was even more heightened when he thought of the 20₤ it was costing him to get these wenches back in his possession.

“You must be the master of the house—Fergus Mullen?” replied Morgan as he dismounted his horse.
“Yes that is correct—and you are?” replied Fergus smugly.
“I am sorry my good sir, allow me to introduce myself, I am Morgan Travis, I am a bounty hunter, these are my associates the Black brothers, Ronnie, Dillan, and Jimmy Gopps. We are delivering to you sir the runaway women of your household—upon receiving the 20₤ bounty you offered.”
“Yes of course—come inside so we may conduct our business” scowled Fergus.

“Ronnie and Dillan you can untie the ladies hands...”
“No just leave their hands tied and sit them both down on that couch over there—and leave them for me to deal with in my own way” ordered Fergus.
“Certainly sir as you wish—they are your property after all” Morgan replied giving Fergus a dirty look. The men had loosely tied the women's hands together just to make the effect more convincing for Fergus.

Fergus quickly pulled out the twenty pounds from a box on his desk, and handed it over to Morgan.
“I thank you for this kind sir it will make a generous wedding present for Una and her beloved—Callum.”
Fergus tried to jump up out of his chair, but he was quickly pushed back down into it, and bound to it.
“What is the meaning of this? Untie me at once! Who are you what do you want!” Fergus shouted at Morgan with fire in his eyes.
Morgan slapped Fergus hard across the face, again and again until Fergus sat with his head hanging limp in front of him.

“If it was up to me I would squeeze the life out of your worthless body right now with my bare hands—justice for all of the people that you have mistreated and abused especially dear Effie, Una, your son, and that poor cook Vera that you murdered in cold blood. You deserve to burn in hell man for the evil things you have done to these poor souls! I don't want to hear another word from your vile wretched mouth, nothing you have to say is worth listening to. Morgan tied a gag on Fergus' mouth.

You poison those around you with your evil and unjust treatments of the innocent soles, that have been at your mercy for far too long. I guess you have figured out by now that I am not here to return these women into your evil hands, but I am here for a few other matters. First I need to examine the cellar of this home where is it located?
Una led Morgan towards the cellar door. He told her to remain upstairs with everyone else while he examined the cellar in search of Vera's dead body.
